The Public Works Department is responsible for the functions of the town relating to streets, highways, bridges, and storm drains, recreational facilities, and public buildings. The department also cooperates with other departments and functions of the town government by furnishing labor, materials and equipment.
With approval of the Town Council, changes have been made at the Department of Public Works.
On Friday, July 21, 2017, the front office will be closed and will remain closed on weekdays. On weekdays, the DPW facility grounds will not be open to access by the public except for the area of the yard waste dumpster.
Bookings for the North Scituate Community House and other Town owned facilities will be administered at the Town Clerk's Office.
Mattresses that are clean, dry, and not showing signs of mold, small propane tanks and drain oil will be accepted at DPW on Saturdays from 8:30 AM through 12:00 PM. Mattresses that have been outside and wet, or are showing signs of mold cannot be accepted locally at DPW and must be taken directly to the RI Resource Recovery Facility in Johnston for disposal.
The yard waste dumpster will remain open to residents for acceptable yard waste every day the main gates at DPW are open on weekdays from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm and Saturdays from 8:30 am - noon.
Emergencies such as trees across roads and other conditions that jeopardize public safety should be reported to the Scituate Police Department via 911.
Indie Cycle, LLC, a local collector of electronic waste, provides services for the Town of Scituate, RI.
Items accepted for recycling are TVs, monitors, computers, laptops, routers, PDA's, cell phones, mice, keyboards, printers, toner cartridges, CD/DVD players, radios, network equipment, wires, stereos, speakers, telephones/systems, microwaves, small household appliances, and auto/marine, lithium batteries, and battery back-ups. Also accepted are air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and other coolant containing devices. Not accepted: Light bulbs, single use batteries, tapes/disks, glass, broken TV tubes, Styrofoam or any hazardous waste materials.
